Location of artwork
- The artwork will be located on the 2 sides of external lift cladding of the new Camberwell lifts adjacent to D Block (Painting Studios, Victorian Building) at Camberwell College of Arts, Peckham Road site.
Aims
- To create a stimulating, visually and aesthetically engaging artwork, which sympathetically draws upon Camberwell’s historic arts and crafts heritage and links it with the College’s twenty-first-century vision and social purpose.
- To be visually sympathetic to the existing architecture and to form a ‘narrative’ frieze or serial/modular artwork within the triple-height courtyard drawing the eye upwards.
- To generate a sense of identity and pride in those students and staff using the building, engaging people’s attention and imagination.
Brief
- The art commission should form an enlivening intervention in the triple height courtyard between the contemporary A Block and the Victorian D Block buildings and the Victorian D Block and C Block.
- Within the context of the agreed material and its treatment (water-jet cut aluminium or steel panels (2m x 1m each) in a bronze colour) the final artwork could incorporate pattern, abstract or representational imagery, forming a ‘narrative’ up through the building. Apertures are required in specific panels to let light in (exact location of apertures will be discussed with the successful student/alumni).
- Artists are asked to research and propose a design approach and imagery that has a direct connection to the site, and is relevant to its function and context as a learning environment.
- The design must be new, unique, your own, and generated specifically for this commission.
Design Submission Requirements
Artists are required to provide the following:
- Drawings, images or photomontages detailing the design proposal
- Computer-generated images or photomontages indicating the design proposal in context, from at least two viewpoints
- A digital maquette/sample panel indicating an approach to the design
- Written statement describing the artistic concept
